Winter in Colorado brings unique challenges for rural families
Founder & Director
Feeding Rural Colorado was founded by Dustin Story, a member of the Peyton, Colorado community who saw firsthand the struggles that many families in rural areas face, especially during the harsh winter months.
What started as a simple desire to help neighbors has grown into a grassroots movement bringing together community members who believe that no one should go hungry or cold.
We operate a community food pantry with a "take what you need, give what you can" philosophy. This approach maintains dignity while ensuring that families have access to essential resources.
Our pantry is stocked through donations from generous community members, local businesses, and supporters from across the country who believe in our mission.
Rural communities often face unique challenges - limited access to resources, harsh weather conditions, and geographic isolation. Many families must travel long distances to access basic services, and during winter, these challenges are magnified.
We're here to bridge that gap, bringing essential resources directly to the communities that need them most.
"Let's be the change we wish to see in the world!"

A Peyton man running a 24-hour food pantry out of his driveway said the demand has grown far beyond what he initially expected.
Dustin Story, who started the pantry earlier this month, told 11 News he launched "Feeding Rural Colorado" with just three plastic totes and a hand-painted sign. The pantry served its first visitors within hours, and Story said it has been busy ever since.
"For the first 16 days we didn't have a shed at all, everything sat outside until volunteers donated one and installed it on November 16," Story said.
Story said families arrive throughout the day and night, sometimes at three or four in the morning. He told 11 News that refrigerated items such as milk, eggs, meat and fresh produce go the fastest, along with feminine hygiene products.
The pantry recently gained traction on TikTok, prompting international support. Story said donations have arrived from Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia through the Amazon wish list linked in his TikTok bio.
"People out here rely on this, it's nice for it to be anonymous. Food insecurity is a real thing, and it affected me as a child, so being able to do this is healing," Story said.
Story is still on SNAP himself, but said that has not stopped him from helping others. He said he hopes the pantry can continue supporting families in eastern El Paso County, where access to traditional food banks can be limited.
Anyone interested in donating can drop off items at Story's home or use the Amazon wish list linked on his TikTok page.
